Discover Forever

Why we started Prefrontal

A grid of twenty images from the history of discovery, from a hand-drawn diagram of the planets orbiting the sun, a microscope drawing of cells, Darwin's tree sketch and Mendeleev's periodic table, through an early X-ray of a hand, Cajal's neurons, DNA X-ray diffraction and a Feynman diagram, to grid cells, a particle collision, the cosmic microwave background, gravitational waves and the first image of a black hole.

At Prefrontal, we are building AI systems to make radical new discoveries that expand the frontier of knowledge.

Throughout history, the greatest breakthroughs, like Darwin’s evolution or Einstein’s relativity, relaxed an assumption that previously appeared absolute. To us, this is the heart of discovery: recognizing that whatever lens a human or an agent currently looks through is never the final answer. Discovery comes from obsessing over a problem and exploring it from multiple, partially independent angles until it breaks into a new conceptual understanding. By giving primacy to reality over prior belief, discovery unlocks the continued potential of the world.

Prefrontal was founded to build machine intelligence capable of this kind of thought. We are a focused frontier lab uniting expert AI researchers and engineers from DeepMind and Meta with neuroscientists, cognitive scientists and physicists. We both operate at the absolute forefront of technical capability and rethink how AI should work from the ground up. Our fundamentally new architectures maintain a rich interplay of distinct perspectives and hold them lightly enough to reorganize whenever the existing structure reaches its limits.

We view the capacity for discovery not only as the key to deeper breakthroughs, but as the foundation of a flourishing future. The problem is urgent. AI could entrench inequality or empower everyone. The difference is building systems that genuinely discover and communicate their understanding to all. We want the frontier to belong to everyone, through discoveries that benefit all of humanity and leave no one behind.
